Aluminum fluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AlF3. It can be produced by reacting aluminum hydroxide or metallic aluminum with hydrogen fluoride, or by treating aluminum chloride with hydrofluoric acid and ammonia. It appears as colorless or white crystals and does not dissolve in water, acids, or bases. The substance is stable but decomposes upon heating. In electrolysis, it serves as an electrolyte regulator and catalyst.

Preparation Method
The hydrofluoric acid reacts with aluminum hydroxide at a high temperature to obtain aluminum fluoride trihydrate, which is then calcined and dehydrated to obtain anhydrous aluminum fluoride. Alternatively, each aluminum fluoride may be prepared from fluorite, sulfuric acid, and aluminum hydroxide.

Application
Aluminum fluoride sees its primary use as an additive in aluminum production and by electrolysis. Aluminum manufacturing must include extracting the aluminum from its ore, in which the ore is covered in pure aluminum oxide and is then electrolyzed by a solution of aluminum fluoride and cryolite. These two chemicals help lower the melting point and increases the conductivity of the aluminum solution.
One of the more interesting findings about aluminum fluoride uses is the wide variety in which it has found its way into very specific industries and activities. For instance, it is an ingredient in fluoroaluminate glass production. Fluoroaluminate glass is found in optical fiber applications, such as fiber-optic imaging and medical applications.
