Aluminum fluoride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula AlF3. It can be produced by reacting aluminum hydroxide or metallic aluminum with hydrogen fluoride, or by treating aluminum chloride with hydrofluoric acid and ammonia. It appears as colorless or white crystals and does not dissolve in water, acids, or bases. The substance is stable but decomposes upon heating. In electrolysis, it serves as an electrolyte regulator and catalyst.

Application
Aluminum fluoride is predominantly used as an additive in aluminum production, particularly during electrolysis. The process involves extracting aluminum from its ore by covering it with pure aluminum oxide and electrolyzing it in a solution containing aluminum fluoride and cryolite. This combination lowers the melting point and enhances the conductivity of the aluminum solution.
Aluminum fluoride is frequently used in ceramics, primarily as the main chemical compound in glazes for finished products. It is also utilized in creating refractory ceramic materials. Additionally, its application extends to the beer and wine industries, where it effectively inhibits the fermentation process.
The hydrofluoric acid reacts with aluminum hydroxide at a high temperature to obtain aluminum fluoride trihydrate, which is then calcined and dehydrated to obtain anhydrous aluminum fluoride. Alternatively, each aluminum fluoride may be prepared from fluorite, sulfuric acid, and aluminum hydroxide.
