Application
Additives used in aluminum metal production include aluminum fluoride (AlF3), which is widely utilized in the electrolytic production of aluminum.
Aluminum fluoride serves multiple functions in the aluminum electrolysis industry: it lowers the melting point of the electrolyte, enhances electrical conductivity, acts as a flux for non-ferrous metals, and is a component of fluxes and glazes for ceramics and enamel. It also functions as an anti-fermentation agent in essential oil production and as an inhibitor in secondary alcohol fermentation processes. Additionally, aluminum fluoride is employed in welding fluxes for metal welding and in the manufacturing of optical lenses.
In the electrolytic production of aluminum, aluminum fluoride, when used with cryolite, reduces the melting point below 1000°C, forming a water-soluble molten salt solution. This molten solution is then electrolyzed to produce metallic aluminum.
