Potassium Cryolite as an active filler for glass, ceramic and friction compound
Product Description
Cryolite is mainly used as fluxing agent in the production of aluminum electrolysis, rubber, wheel wear resistant filler, enamel opal agent, glass of sunscreen and metal flux, crops insecticide, etc.
Hall - Heroult method is to use cryolite based fluoride as solvent to produce aluminium melt method, so far haven't found another compounds can take the place of cryolite. This is because the cryolite besides can dissolve the alumina also has some other indispensable properties, such as excluding than aluminum correction electrical elements, good stability, under the condition of the general decomposition, non-volatile, deliquescence, melting point higher than that of aluminum, good conductivity, electricity saving, etc.

Physical properties
1 | Aluminum fluoride is available as white powder or crystal with density of 3.00g/cm3, melting point is 1040°C, boiling point is 1272°C. |
2 | It is slightly soluble in water, hardly soluble in acid and alkali solution, insoluble in most organic solvents, also insoluble in hydrofluoric acid and liquefied hydrogen fluoride. |
3 | The property of anhydrous aluminum fluoride is very stable. |
4 | It doesn’t react with liquid ammonia or concentrated sulfuric acid by heating to fuming and doesn’t changeable when co-melted with potassium hydroxide. |
5 | It is not reduced by hydrogen and doesn’t decompose through heating but it may sublime. |
6 | It can be hydrolyzed partly to hydrogen fluoride and aluminum oxide in the vapour of 300-400°C. |
Application
1 | Aluminum fluoride is used as auxiliary ingredient of electrolyte during the production of electrolytic aluminum to decrease the melting point and increase the conductivity of electrolyte. |
2 | it is a flux for non-ferrous metal, as a zymotic inhibitor in the alcohol and essential oil production and as a fusing assistant for ceramic, enamel and the component of glaze. |
