Basic Information
- Chemical Formula: CaF₂
- Molar Mass: 78.07 g/mol
- Appearance: Pure calcium fluoride is colorless crystal or white powder. Its natural ore—fluorite—is slightly green, purple or colorless and transparent with a vitreous luster due to impurities.
- Density: 3.18 g/cm³
- Melting Point: 1423 ℃
- Boiling Point: 2500 ℃
- Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water, slightly soluble in inorganic acids and ammonium salt solutions, and soluble in concentrated acids, aluminum salt and iron salt solutions.
Main Applications
- Metallurgical Industry: Served as a flux in metal smelting, it is widely used in basic open-hearth steelmaking, basic oxygen furnace steelmaking, electric arc furnace steelmaking and clinker calcination, which can lower the melting point of furnace charge and improve smelting efficiency.
- Chemical Industry: It is the core raw material for producing hydrogen fluoride, hydrofluoric acid, elemental fluorine and various fluoride salts. It also acts as an optimal substitute for freon and a catalyst carrier in the preparation of fluorohydrocarbons.
- Building Materials Industry: As a flux in glass manufacturing, it promotes the melting of glass raw materials; in ceramic production, it is used as a ceramic glaze to enhance color development and solubility. Nano-calcium fluoride crystals can also be used as ceramic fillers. In cement production, it reduces the sintering temperature of furnace charge and cuts fuel consumption.
- Optical Engineering: It is an excellent optical material with high transmittance in the ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectral regions. It is used to manufacture various optical components (e.g., prisms, lenses, windows) and the matrix material of solid-state lasers.
- Other Fields: Applied in dentistry for oral care products; pure and transparent fluorite is processed into jewelry and handcrafts; it is also used in the production of welding electrodes and fluoride-containing coatings.
